Revamped SAD 1 budget approved PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Less than a month after rejecting the first budget, taxpayers in SAD 1 on Tuesday passed a stripped-down budget for the district's 2009-10 school year.
The district’s $22.7 million fiscal plan, which they initially opposed during voting on June 9, passed 635-498.
The district consists of Presque Isle, Castle Hill, Chapman, Mapleton and Westfield.
After the initial budget was turned down June 9, the board slashed the budget by $419,672.
The new budget was the same budget that was approved last year.
During Tuesday's voting, the only community to oppose the budget was Westfield, where residents voted 32-19 against the budget.
Superintendent Gehrig Johnson said Wednesday he was pleased the budget passed.
Lucy Richard, chairwoman of the SAD 1 board, also was happy to have a budget in place.
“The SAD 1 board of directors thanks the public for its support of our budget,” she said in a statement released Wednesday. “The board understands there is a climate of economic stress in our communities and at the same time is committed to a high quality of education to SAD 1’s 2,000 children.”
The revised budget was amended in several places.
The district previously had set aside federal funding to explore whether windmills would be a good fit to power district schools. The board decided to take $150,000 out of that account to cover operational projects SAD 1 had funded. Other amendments also were made.
The district was hit with a $316,000 loss in state funding due to a spike in the local valuation of communities in the district. Officials also had to eliminate 11 positions in administrative and support areas.
